Embroidered Christmas Stocking Oven Mitt

To begin, the link above to open a PDF of the mitt pattern. The mitt pattern is split into three sections, which will print on three pieces of paper.

Cut out the three sections. Align the sections together as instructed on the printout and tape them together.

Now we will prepare the fabric for the front of the mitt. Cut a piece of quilted cotton fabric a couple of inches bigger than the pattern piece. Pin the pattern piece in the center of the fabric, with the fabric right side up, and trace the shape.

Remove the pattern. Now, create paper templates of the designs by printing them at full size using embroidery software. If you don't have embroidery software, you can cut a piece of paper the shape and dimensions of the designs to help with placement and centering.

Arrange the templates inside the pattern shape how you want them - leave at least one inch of space between the edges of the designs and the edges of the pattern shape. Then, using an air-erase pen or other marking tool, poke a hole in the center of each template and mark the fabric. Also, mark the horizontal and vertical axis points on each template.

Remove the templates and draw lines to connect the marks. These lines will be used for hooping.

Spray a piece of medium weight cutaway stabilizer with temporary adhesive and smooth the fabric on top. Then, hoop the fabric and stabilizer together by aligning the marks on the hoop with the lines on the fabric. Attach the hoop to the machine and load the first design. Move the hoop so that the needle is directly over the center point on the fabric. Embroider the design.

After the design has finished, trim away the excess stabilizer on the back of the embroidery. Be sure to leave 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch excess around the edges of the design. Repeat the hooping and embroidering process for each design.

Next, cut out the stocking shape.

To prepare the fabric for the backside of the mitt, lay the pattern piece, printed side down, on the right side of the fabric. Pin the pattern in place, trace and cut out the shape.

Use the pattern piece to trace and cut two pieces of Insul-bright lining and two pieces of cotton fabric for the inner lining (we used quilter's cotton).

Cut section #3 from the bottom of the pattern by cutting along the line between section #3 and section #2. This bottom portion will be used to cut the fabric for the inner flap which will create the grasping section of the mitt.

To prepare the fabric for the inner flap, cut a piece of quilted cotton 14 inches wide by 10 inches high. Then, fold the fabric widthwise (bring the short ends together) and press the fold with an iron.

Align the straight edge of section #3 pattern piece with the folded edge of the fabric, pin in place, trace the shape, and cut it out. 

Experiment with variegated thread to create pattern and depth in the background stitching.  We used Madeira variegated thread for these examples. Shop it here: <ink>

Now it is time to assemble the mitt! First, align one layer of Insul-bright with the wrong side of the embroidered front piece and lay them flat with the embroidered side facing up. Then, align the back piece on top of the embroidered front piece right sides facing. Align the remaining Insul-bright piece on top of the back piece.

Align the quilted cotton and Insul-bright inner flap pieces together (with the right side of the cotton facing up) and fold together with the Insul-bright sides aligned. Then, insert the folded inner flap piece between the quilted cotton layers of the mitt section and align the quilted cotton sides of the inner flap with the quilted cotton sides of the bottom stocking and pin in place.

Sew a 1/2 inch seam starting at the top right corner of the stocking and ending at the inner fold of the inner flap. We used a walking foot to help keep the layers of fabric from shifting.

On the opposite side of the stocking, sew a 1/2 inch seam starting at the inner fold of the inner flap and ending at the top corner of the stocking (leave the top edge open for turning).

Sew a 1/2 inch seam around the bottom edges of each bottom section of the stocking starting and stopping at the inner fold of the inner flap - when sewing one section be sure to pull the other section back out of the way so they do not get sewn together.

Cut slits in the seam allowance, about every 1/2 inch, along all curved edges. Then, turn the mitt right side out.

Align the cotton fabric inner lining pieces together and pin in place just as you did previously. Sew a 1/2 inch seam along the side and bottom edges.

Trim the seam allowance leaving about 1/8 inch excess.

Insert the inner lining inside the mitt with the wrong sides facing. Align the top edges together, pin in place, and sew a 1/4 inch seam along the entire top edge of the mitt.

On the top right corner of the mitt, open about one inch of the seam of both the mitt and the lining using a seam ripper.

Cut a 24 inch piece of quilt binding and wrap it around the top edge of the mitt leaving a few inches of excess (on both ends) extending out to the upper right of the mitt. The excess tape will be used to create a loop. Pin in place.

Sew an 1/8 inch seam along the inner edge of the bias tape starting at one raw end of the tape and ending about one inch away from the opposite end.

Turn the raw edge of the unsewn end in 1/4 inch and press. Insert the sewn end into the folded end about one inch and pin in place. Sew an 1/8 inch seam along the open edge of the tape to secure the loop. Then, using needle and thread, sew the loop together where it meets the mitt.
