Embroidered Golf Christmas Stocking

Embroidered Golf Christmas Stocking

Golfers will adore this stocking, especially when they discover it on Christmas morning filled with tees, balls, gloves, and an embroidered golf towel. Spell "Dad" or "Mom" with applique letters -- or stitch a monogram for a custom look!

Supplies & Materials:

Project Materials or Supplies

- 1/4 yard white felt
- 1/4 yard black felt
- 1/2 yard plaid cotton fabric
- Small pieces of twill for applique letters
- 3" x 3" piece of black faux leather
- Medium-weight (2.5 ounce) cutaway stabilizer
- Temporary spray adhesive (like Gunold KK100)
- Air-erase pen for marking
- Masking tape
- Fabric glue

The designs used in this tutorial include:ย

For this tutorial, I used the 3" size of theย ย Collegiate Applique Alphabetย . White twill applique fabric made the letters stand out nicely from the plaid cotton. Choose designs that will fit into a 7" x 10" space for this stocking.

Finished size:

18" from cuff to heel
12" from heel to toe
7" opening

To get started, print the pattern pieces by first downloading the PDF file using the link below. There are three pieces that will print on 8 1/2" x 11" pieces of paper.

Gather Materials:

Cut out each shape, then tape the two pattern pieces together to make the shoe shape.

Two white paper pattern pieces labeled "Section 1," "Section 2," and "Overlay" placed on a wood surface. A hand with a ring holds down one corner.

Pin the shoe pattern to a piece of white felt, and cut out the shoe shape.

Repeat so you have two pieces of shoe-shaped white felt.

Pin the overlay pattern to black felt, and cut out two pieces.

Hand cutting black fabric around a pinned paper template labeled "Overlay" on a wooden table, with a black fabric piece nearby and orange-handled scissors.

Place one of the white felt pieces with the toe facing to the left. This will be the back of the shoe.

Place the other white felt piece with the toe facing to the right. This is the front of the shoe.

Align the black overlay fabric in the center of the shoe pieces and pin in place.

Two white fabric stocking shapes laid flat on a wooden surface with black fabric pieces pinned on top in the pattern of a golf shirt. A person's hand with a silver ring rests near one of the stockings.

Sew a 1/4" seam around the entire outer edge of the overlay pieces.

Black felt fabric with white stitching is pinned and being sewn on a white felt backing using a sewing machine. One white and one blue pin are visible.

Align the assembled shoe pieces with the right sides together and pin in place.

Sew a 1/2" seam along the side and bottom edges, leaving the top edge open.

Cut slits, 1" apart, around the seam allowance. Be careful not to cut the seam.
These cuts allow the sides of the shoe to be shaped properly when turned right side out.

White fabric pieces cut and layered on a wooden surface with scissors trimming the curved edge, showing sewing pattern outlines and preparation for stitching.

Next, prepare the pant section of the stocking.

Cut four pieces of the plaid cotton 9" x 14 1/2". Two of the pieces are for the outer shell, and two are for the lining.

Take one of the pieces of plaid and measure and mark the center of each side.
Usually an air-erase pen is used for marking, but in this case, the marks didn't show up well on the plaid fabric. Masking tape is used instead.

Draw lines on the tape connecting the center side marks. Where the lines meet is the exact center of the fabric.

A hand holding a blue pencil marks a red, green, and yellow plaid fabric divided by two vertical beige strips on a wood surface. A 12-inch Westcott metal ruler lies across the fabric.

Print the design from embroidery software to make a template.

In this example, the letters are placed down the fabric, with the centers of the designs on the center point of the vertical strip of masking tape. Your design placement will vary depending on the designs you're using.

A hand with a blue pen marks masking tape strips on red and green plaid fabric with three white letters spelling โ€œDADโ€ taped at the center.

Start Embroidering:

Spray a piece of cutaway stabilizer and smooth the fabric on top.
Hoop the fabric and stabilizer together, and align the marks on the hoop with the marks for the first embroidery design.

Red, green, and yellow plaid fabric is stretched and secured with white tape inside a white embroidery hoop on a wooden surface.

Attach the hoop to the machine and move the hoop so the needle is right over the center point.

Embroider the first design.

Repeat for the other designs you're using on the stocking.

There is no need to trim the stabilizer away from the back of the fabric. Leaving it in will add more stability to the stocking.

After embroidering the designs, place one of the plaid fabric pieces on top of the embroidered piece, right sides together.

Pin in place and sew a 1/2" seam along each long side only, leaving the short ends open.

Turn the fabric right side out and press the seams with an iron.

To prepare the inner lining, align the two remaining cotton pieces together, right sides together.

To prepare the loop, cut a piece of cotton 2" x 7" long.

Fold the long sides together to meet in the center of the fabric and press.

Fold the fabric again with the folded edges together and press.

Bring the ends of the loop together and insert it, loop side pointing down, between the layers along the right side seam.

Align the ends of the loop with the top edges of the shell and outer lining.

Pin the top edges of the shell and lining in place.

Hand holding a small loop of red, green, and yellow plaid fabric next to the pinned edge of a larger matching plaid fabric on a wood surface.

Sew a 1/2" seam around the entire top edge. This attaches the top edges and the loop.

Next, attach the shoe to the pants.
Turn the pant section inside out.

Lay the pant section with the bottom edge facing towards you and the embroidered side facing upwards (since the pant section is turned inside out the embroidery will face up from the inside).

Lay the shoe section with the toe facing to the right and the bottom facing up.

Next, prepare the fringed section of the shoe.

Cut a piece of faux leather to 3" x 3".

Using a dressmaker's pencil on the back, make 3/8" marks along two of the adjacent sides.

Draw lines connecting the marks. Also, draw a line down the center parallel to the lines you just drew.

The creative idea of featuring a plaid quilter's cotton pant and golfer's shoes on this stocking give it a stand-out style.
