  • 1-2 yards of fabric for front/back scarf pieces
  • Scissors
  • Marking pen or pencil
  • Ruler
  • Iron
  • Ironing board
  • Pressing cloth
  • Sewing machine
  • Temporary spray adhesive
  • Cut away stabilizer
  • Template

Pillow Patterns:

Print off the template and make sure that it is printed at 100% or full scale. This will help ensure that all the pieces are the right size before you cut out your fabric and assemble.

Tape the template pieces together where indicated and then trim out with a pair of scissors.

Scarf pattern assembled

Trace the template on the layered fabric with a marking tool of your choice. Flip the pattern piece over and trace it again, so the points are going opposite directions when the fabric is right side up.

If you are using single layers of fabric, you will need to trace the template four separate times. Trace the template two times with the template facing right side up and then flip the template over and trace it another two times.

Cut out each of the pieces following the traced outlines on the fabric. You can use scissors or a rotary cutter.

Place your printed template of your design on the sash and figure out where you want it to go. Tall and narrow designs will work best. Keep in mind the seam allowance on either side, and the pointed end of the scarf.

Placing it too low may have the design be too close to the edge when the sash is finished. You can reference the wreath sash template for placement help if you need to as well.

Once you have figured out the placement of the design, mark the alignment lines with a ruler and marking tool. Be sure to extend the lines after removing the template to make hooping and machine alignment easier.

Stabilize and hoop the fabric using the alignment lines to center it in the hoop. If you are using a larger hoop due to a taller design, you may want to additionally secure the fabric with tape or by hand sewing a basting stitch around the edge of the fabric.

Hooped fabric and stabilizer

Load the file and hoop onto the machine. Use the alignment lines to help place the design in the marked center on the fabric.

Embroider the file, being sure to complete any color changes.

Remove finished embroidery from hoop

If you would like to embroider on the other front sash piece as well, you will need to repeat the process.

repeat for second side if you

Cover the embroidered sash piece with a pressing cloth and press with an iron. Repeat this step if you also embroidered the other front sash piece.

Press the embroidery

Use scissors to remove the excess stabilizer from the back of the embroidered piece.

Trim away stabilizer

Clip or pin two sash pieces together at the top. Be sure that the points are going the same direction when clipped together, and that right sides are together.

Pin or clip center back

Stitch together at the top with a half inch seam allowance.

Sew the back center seam

Press open the seam with a pressing cloth and an iron.

Press open seam

Repeat the process for the second piece.

Back piece and front piece, both sewn

Place the right sides together with the points matching and clip or pin the sash together. Leave a space for a 3-4” opening.

Pin or Clip around outer edges of the scarf

Sew the two pieces together with a ½” seam allowance, being sure to not sew the 3-4” opening shut.

Sewing the scarf

Trim the corners and points of the sash with a pair of scissors. At the large end point, trim a little extra off after the point to help remove some bulk. This will help it lay flatter after it is turned out.

Trim the corners

Using the opening, turn the entire sash right side out. Use a tool of your choice to help poke out the corners and points at the ends of either side of the sash.

Press the entire sash with an iron, being sure to cover it with a pressing cloth.

Press full scarf

Hand sew the opening closed with matching thread using a ladder stitch or a stitch of your choice.

Hand sew the scarf shut

If desired, you can also top stitch around the entire perimeter of the sash for an extra finishing touch.

Optional top stitching

You now have a customized wreath sash to display on your front door wreath or in your home, consider making additional ones for additional holidays or special events.
