Add a three-dimensional look to your projects with embossed machine embroidery. These designs tamp down the fabric nap, and the negative space allows the design element to stand out for an eye-catching and textural look. These project instructions will show you how to tackle your own embossed machine embroidery project step by step.

Supplies & Materials:

Project Materials or Supplies
- Fiberglass screen from the hardware or home improvement store
- Heavy-weight, water-soluble stabilizer
- 12-inch, light-weight zipper
- 3 large grommets and grommet tool

The designs used in this tutorial include:

- X1078, Puzzle Alphabet Design Pack (5 Inch Height)

Sew your letter monogram onto a piece of fiberglass screen that is slightly larger than a piece of letter-size paper. Use one piece of Heavy-weight, water-soluble stabilizer.

After it is finished sewing, cut away the extra stabilizer.

Use a piece of letter-size paper as a template and cut out the front of your pencil case. The monogram should be just right of center on the paper.

Cut out the front and back pieces the same size as the paper.

Soak the embroidery in warm water to dissolve the stabilizer.

Allow the embroidery to dry flat on a paper towel.

When the embroidery is dry, cut the front into two pieces. The left strip is 2 1/2" wide

Sew the zipper into the front of the pencil case. Use a 3/8" seam allowance

With the zipper partially open for access, lay the back piece over the front piece, right sides together.

Stitch around the entire perimeter of the pencil case and over the ends of the zipper. Trim the corners and the zipper ends.

Now, open the zipper and turn the case right side out, through the opening zipper. Topstitch around the perimeter.

Place the grommets accordingly to fit into a standard 3-ring binder. Place one in the center, then the top and bottom, 4 1/2" above and below it on center.
