Quilted Pillow

Quilted Pillow

Part pillow, part quilt, this "quillow" provides cozy and fashionable comfort.

Embellished with juicy fruit in delicious colors, this quillow is a perfect accent to three-season porch lounges, and quick to open and spread over your lap when the cool air rolls in at night.

Supplies & Materials:

- 1/2 yard fabric (for pillow)
- 2 yards fabric (quillow top)

- 2 yards fabric (quillow bottom)
- 45" x 65" batting

The designs used in this tutorial include:

- Candlewick Strawberries (lg)

For the pillow portion of the quillow, we selected a sturdy cotton material. Cut into two panels, each 16 1/2" x 16 1/2".

Embroider the strawberry circle in the center, and then repeat the strawberry border on the outside, forming a square. We stabilized the cotton for the embroidery with one piece of medium-weight cutaway stabilizer.

Place the two panels wrong side together, and sew using a flat-felled 1/4" seam. Using a flat-felled seam will make the pillow more durable. Sew the seam all the way around the panels and set aside.

Cut the top and back fabric to 45" x 65". For these fabric pieces, we selected a plain color for the bottom, and strawberry print for the top.

Set the top piece (strawberry print) aside.

Next, we'll sew the prepared pillow section to the back quilt piece. With the back quilt piece lying wrong side up, align the pillow piece. Measure and mark 14" from both corners of the bottom edge of the quilt back. Place the prepared pillow piece, embroidery side down, and the top facing the bottom edge of the quilt piece.

Sew the pillow to the bottom quilt piece, leaving the bottom edge open. This will create a "pocket for the quilt to be folded and tucked into.

Now we'll sew the top quilt, back piece, and batting together. Lay the batting down first. Add the top quilt piece, wrong side down on top of the batting. Finally, add the back piece, pillow side down.

Sew all three layers together, using a 1/4" seam, but do not sew the edge where the pillow meets the bottom of the quilt

At the opening, and between the top and back layers, turn the quilt right side out.

Turn and sew the open seam of the quilt at the top, near the opening for the pillow. Your quillow is complete!

How to fold the quillow:

- Lay flat, top side up

- Fold long sides into thirds

Fold bottom up in half

Fold bottom up again, in half

Turn pillow right side out, tucking folded quilt into the pillow.
