Pretty flowers and lace announce to the world that spring is coming!

Create a country kitchen with gathers and lace. Flowered calico is the perfect backdrop for these delicate delft appliques, and a touch of ruffled lace at the top, lends a feminine touch. Just right for a day in the country.

Supplies & Materials:

Supplies needed:

  • Set of canisters - I purchased these at Target

  • 2-1/2 yards of 1/4 inch wide elastic

Delft Canister set

Start Embroidering:

First we'll start by making the applique patches for the front of each canister.

Sew out the designs on the applique fabric. Make sure that the designs are at least an inch apart when sewn out. Determine what shape that you want the applique pieces to be. You may want them to be round or rectangular. I made them rounded to follow the shape of the designs.

Four white fabric canister covers with delicate blue floral embroidery arranged in a row, each labeled with a small yellow sticky note.

You will want to leave at least 1/4 inch of fabric between the edge of the embroidery and the cut edge of the applique. Cut out matching pieces from the fusible webbing, and fuse to the back of the applique pieces.

Four white oval-shaped fabric pieces, each embroidered with different blue floral patterns, arranged side by side on a black background. Each has a small rectangular label underneath.

Creating the gathered body

Measure the height and circumference of each canister body.

Multiply the circumference of each canister body by 1.5. This will be the width of each cover piece.

Add 2 inches to the height of each canister to get the height of each canister piece.

White cylindrical canister against a black background, vertical ruler behind it measuring about 4.5 inches tall, tape measure horizontally around its circumference reading about 6 inches. A finger points at the tape measure.

Transfer the measurements for each canister piece to the fabric. Mark out the 4 different rectangles and cut them out along the marked lines.

Six rectangular fabric pieces with a blue background and yellow flower pattern are arranged on a black surface.

Create a 10mm or 3/8 inch casing along each long side of the rectangles..

Four rectangular fabric pieces with ruffled edges laid flat on a black surface. The fabric is blue with a pattern of yellow and white flowers and green leaves.

Place the applique pieces in the center of each rectangle. Fuse the pieces into place.

Four rectangular fabric canister covers with blue backgrounds and yellow flowers, each featuring a white oval patch embroidered with a blue snowflake design.

Use an applique stitch to sew the appliques into place. I used a satin applique stitch.

Four fabric canister covers with yellow, blue, and green floral print, each featuring a white oval patch with black floral embroidery in the center.

On the wrong side of the top edge of each piece, attach the lace just below the casing. The lace should not interfere with the casing.

Blue and yellow floral fabric with cream crochet lace ruffle at the top, likely a canister cover, set against a black background.

Cut 2 pieces of elastic that are the same length as the circumference of each canister.

Thread the elastics through the casings, gathering the fabric as you go. Don't let the ends of the elastic slip inside the casings.

Blue canister cover with small white and yellow flowers, featuring a ruffled yellow lace trim along the top edge, laid flat on a black surface.

Fold each cover in half, meeting the unfinished ends. Use a 1/2 inch seam allowance to stitch the ends together. The ends of the elastics should also be sewn into the seam.

Slip the covers onto the canisters, and place them in the best spot on your counter. They are definitely for showing off!
