With the cardigan buttoned, measure the area where the embroidery will be sewn and compare it to the available sizes of the desired design.

This will help determine which size of the design will fit best on the cardigan.

A template, or printout of a design, is an excellent tool to help with placement.

Print a template of the design from your embroidery software. If you do not have embroidery software, Wilcom's TrueSizer is a free program to use.

Arrange the template on the front shoulder of the cardigan, making sure it does not cross over any seams. Use an air-erase pen to mark the center point and the horizontal and vertical axis lines

Then mirror the design with your embroidery software and print out another template for the opposite side of the cardigan.

Place the template onto the opposite side of the cardigan, and position it so that it is symmetrical with the other side.

Mark the center point and axis lines with an air-erase pen.

Cut out a piece of cutaway stabilizer that is slightly bigger than the hoop.

Spray the stabilizer with adhesive, and smooth it onto the inside of the cardigan behind where the first embroidery will sew. It is okay if the stabilizer goes past the edges of the sweater.

Cut a piece of water-soluble stabilizer slightly bigger than the hoop, and lay it on top of the cardigan where the embroidery will be.

Placing water-soluble stabilizer on top of a light knit while embroidering will help keep the stitches from pushing and sinking into the fabric.

Hoop the cardigan and stabilizers together, lining up the marks on the hoop with the lines on the fabric. Some of the fabric may not be hooped, but the spray adhesive will help keep the fabric in place while embroidering.

Attach the hoop onto the machine, and load the design.

Move the hoop until the needle is directly lined up with the center point of the cardigan.

For best results, use hair clips to hold the rest of the cardigan out of the way to prevent it from falling under or over the embroidery while sewing.

Embroider the design.

Once the embroidery is finished, remove the hoop from the machine, and unhoop the cardigan.

Carefully cut or tear away the water-soluble stabilizer from around the embroidery. Then follow the instructions on the packaging to get rid of the rest.

For Sulky Solvy, simply soak the cardigan in water or wash it to remove the rest of the stabilizer.

Then trim away the excess cutaway stabilizer from the back of the design, making sure to leave about 1/2" around the embroidery.

Finally, repeat to embroider the opposite side of the cardigan.

Make sure the second embroidery file is mirrored for best results. This will ensure that the cardigan will be completely symmetrical.
