10" heel to toe
6" opening
To get started, print the PDF of the stocking pattern by clicking the link below. The pattern consists of four pieces that each print on 8 1/2" by 11" inch pieces of paper.
Cut out the pieces and tape them together.
Place rolled pieces of tape on the backside of the overlay pattern and place it on the vinyl.
Trace the shape.
Print the design from embroidery software to make a template. If you don't have software to make templates, use Wilcom's TrueSizer, a free program.
Place the template inside the overlay piece. There should be at least 3/4" of space between the outer edges of the design and the edges of the shape.
Mark the center point, as well as the vertical and horizontal axis points of the template.
In this example, masking tape is used, as oftentimes marks drawn onto vinyl don't show up well.
Remove the template and draw lines connecting the axis points. These lines will be used when hooping.
Spray cutaway stabilizer with temporary adhesive, and smooth the vinyl on top.
Hoop the vinyl and stabilizer together, lining the marks on the tape with the marks on the hoop.
Attach the hoop to the machine and load the design. Move the hoop so that the needle is aligned with the center point on the tape.
Remove the tape and embroider the design.
After embroidering, trim the stabilizer away from the back.
Cut out the holly overlay shape.
Lay the main stocking pattern on top of the suede cloth.
Pin in place, and trace the shape.
Remove the pattern, and position the embroidered holly overlay piece on the fabric. The top point should be about 2" from the top edge of the boot.
Print a template of the paisley design to stitch onto the boot. Arrange it where you'd like to stitch the design.
Use an air-erase marker to mark the center point and the vertical and horizontal axis points.
Draw lines connecting the horizontal and vertical axis points.
Spray cutaway stabilizer with temporary adhesive, and smooth the fabric on top.
Hoop the fabric and stabilizer together, aligning the marks on the fabric with the marks on the hoop.
Attach the hoop to the machine, load the design so the needle is right over the center point.
Embroider the design.
After embroidering, trim the excess stabilizer away from the back.
Cut a piece of cotton batting the same size as the embroidered suede cloth.
Spray the batting with adhesive and smooth the fabric on top.
Spray the backside of the overlay piece with adhesive and smooth it in place on the stocking shape.
Position it where you had it before, with the top point about two inches from the top of the boot shape.
Top stitch the overlay in place with a 1/4" seam around the entire outer edge.
Add rivets to the overlay. Using a craft knife and cutting pad, cut slits through all the layers of fabric. Make the slits about 1/4" in from the seam at each point of the overlay.
Hammer a rivet at each slit, following packaging instructions.
Next, prepare the vinyl for the heel.
Place the stocking pattern on the vinyl. Trace part of the pattern, starting at the top of the "v" and ending 3" up along the left side.
Remove the pattern and draw a curved line connecting the ends of the traced line. The line should curve slightly inward to the shape.
Cut out the shape. Spray the back of the vinyl with adhesive, and align it on top of the embroidered suede cloth.
Top stitch a 1/4" seam around the entire outer edge of the shape.
To prepare the back stocking fabric, lay the main pattern piece face down on the fabric. Pin in place, trace, and cut out the shape.
Align the front and back pieces together, right sides together. Pin in place.
Sew a 1/2" seam along the side and bottom edges of the stocking. Leave the top edge open for turning.
Clip the seam allowance at the "v" in the heel and at the curved edges, being careful to not cut the seam.
Then, turn the fabric right side out. This is the completed outer shell.
To prepare the inner lining fabric, use the boot pattern to cut two pieces of quilted cotton.
Align them together, right sides together, and pin. Sew a 1/2" seam along the side and bottom edges, leaving the top edge open.
With the inner lining left wrong side out, insert the outer shell inside the inner lining. Align the top edges, and pin in place.
Sew a 1/2" seam along the top edge leaving about 2" open along both the front and back edges at the back corner.
Pull the outer shell out from the inner lining and insert the inner lining into the outer shell.
Press the seams. Fold the fabric of the openings in 1/2" and press.
Pin the openings and top stitch a 1/4" seam along the entire top edge of the stocking.
To prepare the top tab, cut a piece of vinyl 1 1/4" x 6".
Wrap the tab around the front top center of the stocking.
Cut a slit through all layers of the fabric and secure the tab in place with a rivet.
To create the bandana hanger, draw a line between two corners of the bandana. Cut it into two pieces.
On one of the pieces, fold the raw edge over 1/2" to the wrong side and press. Then, sew a 1/4" seam along the fold.
Gather the fabric together in the middle and cinch it by tying thread around and securing it with a knot.
Form a loop, wrap the cord around the fabric about 2 1/2" down from the top of the loop.
Tie a knot, and trim the cord.
Hand sew the loop to the top back corner of the stocking
Western embroidery designs mimic the paisley look of the bandana hanger, and pull the entire stocking together.
