Designs Used

First, cut a piece of vinyl to 22 inches wide by 15 inches high.

Create paper templates of the designs by printing them at full size using embroidery software. If you don't have embroidery software, you can cut a piece of paper the shape and dimensions of the design to help with placement and centering.

We positioned a design in the bottom center of the vinyl. To do this, measure the distance between the left and right sides of the fabric and divide by two. Then, position the design with about 2 inches of space between the bottom edge of the fabric and the bottom edge of the design. Lay strips of masking tape under the horizontal and vertical axis points of the template. Then, poke a hole in the center of the template and mark the tape. Also, mark the axis points.

Remove the template and draw lines connecting the marks. These lines will be used for hooping. Next, spray a piece of medium weight cutaway stabilizer with temporary adhesive and smooth the fabric on top. Hoop the stabilizer and vinyl together by aligning the marks on the hoop with the lines on the tape. Attach the hoop to the machine and load the first design. Move the hoop so that the needle is aligned with the center point on the tape. Remove the tape and embroider the design.

We also placed a design in both bottom corners of the fabric. Keep the outer edges of the designs about 2 inches from the outer edges of the fabric. Repeat the design placement, hooping, and embroidering process for the remaining designs.

When all the designs are complete, trim away the excess stabilizer on the backside of the embroidery.

Cut  the back piece by laying the embroidered front piece on top of the vinyl, trace the shape, and cut out the shape.

Spray the backside of the embroidered front piece with temporary adhesive.

Smooth the back piece on top of the front piece with the wrong sides together.

Using a walking foot on machine (to prevent the vinyl from sticking), sew a 1/2 inch seam along the entire outer edge of the placemat.

To finish off the outer seam allowance, we sewed a decorative stitch along the center of the seam allowance all the way around the outer edge of the placemat.

Now your placemat is ready for your four-legged friend to enjoy!
