Add a beautiful glow to dining room tables, outdoor patios, or mantelpieces with this lace wine glass lampshade. A battery-operated candle sits inside the wine glass and shines through the lace for a soft and elegant look.

Supplies

  • Wine glass (the glass used in this tutorial has a base diameter of 3 1/2"; a top diameter of 2 1/2"; and a glass height of 7")
  • Water soluble stabilizer (like Vilene or Sulky Ultra Solvy)
  • Fabric glue
  • Battery operated tea light

Designs Used

Freestanding lace designs are specially digitized for watersoluble stabilizer. After the stabilizer is removed, beautiful lace remains behind. There are a couple of different kinds of water-soluble stabilizer. One is clear and plastic, and that brand is Sulky Ultra Solvy. The other is soft and fibrous, called Vilene. Both will work very well. Vilene is used in this demonstration.

Use a size 11 or 75/11 sharp sewing needle, not an embroidery needle. A sharp sewing needle has a smaller, finer point than an embroidery needle. That means it makes smaller holes in the stabilizer than an embroidery needle.

Freestanding lace is seen from both sides, so wind a bobbin with the same thread that you're using in the needle.

Hoop the stabilizer firmly. Make sure it is nice and tight with no wrinkles. Take special care that the sides are secure and will not slip while stitching. If the sides slip, then you will see misalignment and gaps.

Use 40 weight rayon or polyester thread. You can also use 30 weight cotton or metallic thread for most freestanding lace designs.

After embroidering, cut the excess stabilizer away.

The stabilizer's packaging should give instructions for removing the excess. For Vilene, soak the lace for a few moments.

Air dry, and press. Be sure to use a pressing cloth to avoid scorching the design.

Prepare both pieces (files "a" and "b").

To assemble the lampshade, add fabric glue along the right straight edge of file “a” and align it with the left straight edge of file “b”. Hold in place for a few moments and allow the glue to dry.

Add glue along one of the remaining straight edges and align the straight edges together forming a cone -- hold in place until the glue sets.

Add the lampshade on top of a wine glass. Add a battery operated tea light inside the wine glass to create a soft and elegant glow.
