Project Tips:
We embroidered an applique design onto our coasters. Click here for more information on embroidering applique designs.
Finished Size:
6 1/4 inches wide by 7 1/4 inches high
To get started, click here to open a PDF file of the coaster pattern. The pattern will print on one piece of paper.
Cut out the shape.
Cut a piece of felt 8 inches wide by 10 inches high and pin the pattern piece onto the fabric. Using an air-erase pen (or other marking tool), trace the pattern.
Create a paper template of the design by printing it at full size using embroidery software. If you don't have embroidery software, you can cut a piece of paper the shape and dimensions of the design to help with placement and centering. If you'd like a recommendation for an embroidery program that can make templates, consider Embird from www.Embird.com.
Position the template at the center of the large, round portion of the shape. Leave at least 3/4 inch of space between the outer edges of the design and the edges of the shape. Poke a hole in the center of the template and mark the fabric. Also, mark the horizontal and vertical axis points.
Remove the template and draw lines to connect the marks.
Spray a piece of medium-weight cutaway stabilizer with temporary adhesive and smooth the fabric on top. Hoop the fabric and stabilizer together by aligning the marks on the hoop with the lines on the fabric. Attach the hoop to the machine and load the design. Move the hoop so that the needle is directly over the center point on the fabric. Embroider the design.
When the design has finished, trim away the excess stabilizer on the back of the embroidery.
To prepare the back fabric, cut another piece of felt 8 inches wide by 10 inches high. Align the embroidered front fabric on top of the back fabric, pin in place, and cut out the shape -- cut through both layers of fabric.
Sew a 1/2 inch seam around the side and top edges -- we used a decorative stitch.
Cut a 3 inch long piece of 2 inch wide fur trim. Pin the trim in place at the bottom edge or cuff of the coaster. Sew the trim in place by using a zigzag stitch along the entire outer edge of the trim -- lay the fur flat to the inside of the trim as you sew.
Repeat all steps above to create a set of 4 or more coasters.
Now that you've got some merry mitten coasters, complete the look with a coordinating ho ho holiday table runner!
