Take a peek into a magical winter wonderland with this snowglobe ornament! Transparent vinyl applique brings a clearly unique look to this in-the-hoop design. Sprinkle sequins or confetti inside to let it snow!

Supplies

Project Needs & Notes:

- 1/4 yard clear vinyl
- 1/4 yard blue felt
- Large flake glitter, sequins, or shaped confetti (optional)
- Tear-away stabilizer
- Masking tape
- Temporary spray adhesive (Gunold's KK100)
- Ribbon

Special Notes:

In this tutorial, glitter can be added inside of the snow globe. For best results, use large flakes of glitter, sequins, or shaped confetti. Do not use normal or fine glitter as it could get inside your embroidery machine while embroidering.

Spray adhesive will show on clear vinyl. For best results, avoid spraying any adhesive onto the actual applique piece to keep it clear.

Trim all unwanted threads from the embroidery before placing and sewing the vinyl piece. Otherwise all unwanted threads will be trapped under the vinyl and will be seen in the finished design.

Designs Used

When you download the applique snowglobe design, you'll find four files. One of the files is an embroidery file, and the other three files are dielines. The dieline file is marked with the letters DL. Dielines are used to cut the fabric to the right shape and size.

Open each dieline file with an embroidery software, and print it. If you do not have embroidery software, Wilcom's TrueSizer is a free program to use.

Cut around the paper dieline circle, leaving a good amount of space around the shape.

Tape the paper dieline onto the vinyl fabric, making sure it is completely flat.

Cut out the shape, and remove the paper and tape.

For the front and back dielines, spray the backside of the printed dieline with a small amount of temporary adhesive. Smooth it onto a piece of felt.

Cut out the felt shapes for the front and back.

Now that the fabric pieces are cut to the proper shape and size, it's time to embroider the design.

Hoop a piece of tear-away stabilizer. Madeira E-Zee Tear 1.5 oz. or Floriani Tearaway Medium are good choices. Those brands are more fibrous, less paper-like, and will tear more cleanly.

Attach the hoop to the machine and load the full embroidery design (not the dieline files).

Use a size 11 or 75/11 sharp sewing needle, rather than an embroidery needle. A sharp sewing needle has a smaller, finer point than an embroidery needle, so that will make smaller perforations in the stabilizer.

Embroider the design. The first thing to embroider will be a dieline or outline. This marks the area on the stabilizer for the front fabric piece.

Remove the hoop from the machine, but do not unhoop the stabilizer.

Spray the back of the front fabric piece with a small amount of temporary adhesive. Place the fabric right inside the sewn outline.

Attach the hoop back onto the machine and continue with the design.

A tack down will sew next. This holds the front fabric in place for the remainder of the design. Then the inner details will embroider.

Watch the color change sheet and stop the machine before sewing the "back piece tack down" step.

On the color change sheet, look for the note that says "back piece tack down." When you get to this step, stop the machine and remove the hoop from the machine, but do not unhoop the stabilizer.

Turn the hoop over, so that the backside of the embroidery is facing up. Cut a piece of ribbon 7" long, and fold it into a loop. Then, position the ribbon, and tape it in place on the back of the embroidery. Also tape the looped end of the ribbon to the hoop to prevent it from sliding around while sewing.

Next, spray the backside of the back fabric piece with adhesive, and place it inside the shape on the backside of the embroidery.

Attach the hoop back onto the machine and sew the tack down step.

Stop the machine again before sewing the "preliminary globe tack down" step. Remove the hoop from the machine, but do not unhoop the stabilizer.

Trim away all unwanted threads. If desired, carefully place the sequins in the center of the embroidery, making sure to keep them away from the edge where the vinyl will be sewn down. Also, do not pile the sequins or glitter too tall, as this will affect the placement of the vinyl piece.

Place the vinyl circle inside of the dieline.

Tape the vinyl circle in place, making sure to place the tape at the four diagonal "corners" of the circle.

Do not put tape at the very top or bottom, or directly at the right or left side as that is where the preliminary tack down will sew.

Embroider the "preliminary tack down" step, and remove the tape from the design.

After removing the tape, embroider the "globe tack down" step on the color change sheet.

Before sewing the "base border," stop the machine, and wind a bobbin with the same thread used in the needle.

From this step onward, the back can be seen, so each color stop should use a matching bobbin.
