Embroidery Library stitcher Tricia recently had her Build-a-Calendar project featured in the Stitchers Showcase. We liked it so much, that we decided to create a similar project.
Come up with a fun theme and choose your favorite embroidery designs to create an interchangeable calendar that can be updated weekly, monthly or whenever you'd like.

Project Tips:
There are hundreds of designs that would work great for this calendar project. Here are a few ideas to get you started: Tweets, Animals in Pajamas, Months of the Year Celebrations, Flowers of the Bible, or Sunbonnet Sue and Fisherman Fred. The possibilities are endless -- have fun experimenting with different designs and themes.
Designs Used
To prepare the fabric for the embroidered square, cut a piece of the solid colored fabric a couple of inches larger than your hoop (we cut ours 13 inches wide by 10 inches high). Using an air-erase pen (or other marking tool), draw a 9 inch by 9 inch square in the center of the fabric.
Measure and mark the center of each side of the square by measuring and dividing by two. Draw lines to connect the marks; where the lines meet is the exact center of the shape.
Create a paper template of the design by printing it at full size using embroidery software. If you don't have embroidery software, you can cut a piece of paper the shape and dimensions of the design to help with placement and centering.
Poke a hole in the center of the template and align it with the center point on the fabric. Make sure the design fits well within the shape - there should be at least 1 1/4 inch between the outer edges of the design and the edges of the shape.
Remove the template and spray a piece of medium-weight cutaway stabilizer with temporary adhesive and smooth the fabric on top. Hoop the fabric and stabilizer together by aligning the marks on the hoop with the lines on the fabric. Attach the hoop to the machine and load the design. Move the hoop so that the needle is aligned with the center point on the fabric. Embroider the design.
When the design has finished, cut out the shape. Leave the stabilizer on the back of the embroidery; this will help give the fabric a bit more shape and support.
To prepare the fabric for the back of the embroidered square, cut a piece of fabric 9 inches wide by 9 inches high.
Then, cut two 9 inch lengths of the hook side of the Velcro and spray the back with temporary adhesive. Smooth the Velcro strips on the right side of the back fabric about one inch from the top and bottom edges. Attach the Velcro by sewing a seam around the outer edges of each piece.
Align the front and back fabric pieces together, wrong sides facing (embroidery and Velcro facing out), and pin in place in the center. Wrap quilt binding around the outer edges of the fabric by starting at one of the bottom corners and pinching and folding the tape at each corner. When you reach the corner were you started, trim the tape, leaving about 1/2 inch excess. Fold the end of the tape in to the wrong side and pin place. Sew a 3/4 inch seam around the entire outer edge of the shape, securing the tape in place.
Now we will prepare the fabric for the main section and pocket. Measure the width and height of your calendar - ours measures 12 inches by 12 inches.
For the pocket, take the width measurement and add 3 inches. Also, take the height measurement and add 1 1/2 inches. Cut two pieces of the print fabric (we are using lightweight canvas) using the measurements you just calculated (we cut our fabric 15 inches wide by 13 1/2 inches high).
Align the fabric pieces together, right sides facing, and pin in place along the top edge. Sew a 1/2 inch seam along the pinned edge only. Turn the fabric right side out and press the seam with an iron. Top stitch a 1/4 inch seam along the top edge and sew a 1/8 inch seam along the side and bottom edges.
Now we will prepare the fabric for the main section of the calendar. To do this, cut two pieces of fabric using the pocket width measurement by 31 1/2 inches high (we cut our fabric 15 inches wide by 31 1/2 inches high).
Lay one of the fabric pieces flat with the right side facing up. Align the pocket with the bottom of the fabric and pin in place.
Place the embroidered square in the center of the fabric above the pocket. Measure equal distances between the edges of the embroidered square and the side edges of the main section, as well as the edges of the square and the top edge of the main section and pocket.
Keeping the embroidered square in place, fold the edges of the square up and mark the fabric of the main section at all four ends of the Velcro strips.
Remove the embroidered square and cut two 9 inch strips of the loop side of the Velcro. Spray the back of the strips with adhesive and smooth them on the fabric using the marks as guides. Attach the Velcro by sewing a seam along the outer edges.
To prepare the back piece of the main section, cut a piece of heavy-weight fusible interfacing one inch smaller than your pocket width by 18 inches high (we cut ours 14 inches wide by 18 inches high).
Spray the interfacing with adhesive and smooth it in place near the top of backside of the remaining main section fabric piece. Leave 1/2 inch of excess fabric at the top edge and along each side. Flip the fabric and interfacing over and press the fabric with an iron to activate the adhesive.
Align the assembled front and back sections together, right sides facing, with the interfacing remaining at the top half. Pin in place and sew a 1/2 inch seam along the side and top edges only - leave the bottom edge open for turning.
Clip the top corners - be careful to not cut the seam.
Turn the fabric right side out and press the seams. Also, turn the fabric of the bottom opening in 1/2 inch and press. Pin in place and top stitch a 1/4 inch seam along the entire outer edge.
Measure and mark the center of the top edge, about 1/2 inch in, by measuring and dividing by two. Using a craft knife, cut an "x" at the mark and add a 1/2 inch grommet by following the manufacturer's instructions on the packaging.
To finish, add the embroidered square by aligning the Velcro strips and pressing it in place. Fold the cover of the calendar over to the back and tuck it into the pocket.
Now you have the perfect accessory to decorate your office or work room, and to keep track of important dates. A year's worth of favorite embroidery makes this calendar uniquely delightful!
