Designs Used

First, embroider the designs onto quilter's cotton.

Quilter's cotton is lightweight, and needs the support of cutaway stabilizer. Spray a piece of cutaway stabilizer with adhesive, and smooth the stabilizer onto the backside of the quilter's cotton.

Hoop both stabilizer and fabric together, with the grain.

You can embroider all three designs on the same piece of fabric, or embroider the designs on three separate pieces of fabric. If you are embroidering the designs on one piece of fabric, leave 3" in between each sewout for seam allowances.

After the embroidery has finished, trim the excess stabilizer away from the backside.

Measure, mark, and cut the designs from the fabric using these measurements:

**Top piece: leave 1 1/4" on the top, 3/4" on each side, and 1/4" on the bottom.

**Middle piece: leave 1/4" on the top, 3/4" on the sides, and 1/4" on the bottom.

**Bottom piece: leave 1/4" on the top, and 3/4" on the sides. For the bottom piece, leave 3/4" along both sides and the pointed side. To mark the allowance for the point, follow the lines of the embroidered border.

After you have marked the fabric, use a rotary cutter to cut along the marked lines.

Sew the three pieces together. Place the top and middle pieces together, right sides together. Align the "checks" of the top design with the "checks" in the middle design. Secure this positioning with pins.

Repeat this with the bottom piece. Place the bottom piece against the middle piece, right sides together, lining up the checks in both pieces. Secure with pins.

Sew the pieces together with a straight stitch, working from the center out to minimize shifting of the fabric.

Stitch across the entire width, just above the checks.

Press the back seams.

The three sewouts are now one long piece.

Next, make the side pieces.

Prepare the fabric for the side pieces. Cut squares for the four corners, 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" each.

For the sides, cut 2 strips at 2.5" x 16".

Begin by sewing one square to one strip. Place the square and strip, right sides together, and sew a 1/4" seam across the width.

Repeat this for all the squares.

Press the back seams.

Next, attach the sides to the embroidered piece. Lay a strip along the top of embroidered piece, right sides together. Align the corners well, and secure with pins.

Sew a 1/4" seam along the entire length of the front piece.

Repeat for the other side.

Press the back seams.

The next step will be to make the pattern for the bottom piece. Flip the front piece over and tape an 8 1/2" x 11" piece of paper to the backside.

Draw vertical lines straight down from the right side, the right side of the embroidered piece, and the point.

Measure and mark 2 1/2" out following the angle of the left side of the bottom point.

Measure and mark 2 1/2" out following the angle of the right corner (use the corner of the checkered border as a guide).

Draw a line connecting these two points. Draw a line tracing the edges of the fabric.

Remove the paper from the fabric, and measure and mark a 1/4" seam allowance around the top and left side of the shape.

Cut out the shape following the seam allowance lines.

Trace the shape onto fabric. Then flip the paper over to trace the second piece.

Cut out the shapes.

Place the pieces right sides together, secure with pins, and sew a 1/4" seam along the point.

Now that the bottom piece is prepared, attach it to the bottom point.

With right side down, align the bottom piece with the front piece along the edge as shown. Make a small slit in the lower corner to help the fabric lay flat.

Sew a 1/4" seam along the edge where the fabric meets.

Flip the point down.

Align the top edge of the bottom point with the bottom edge of the side piece, and sew a 1/4" seam along the edge where the fabric meets.

Repeat this for the other side, and press the back seams.

Next, prepare the batting and back piece. Lay the front piece on the back fabric, and trace around the shape of the front. Cut out the shape.

Lay the front piece on the batting, and cut around the shape.

Lay the batting down first. Then, place the front piece, wrong side down, on top of the batting. Finally, lay the back side, right side down, on top of the front piece.

Lay the tassel, fringe side inside, between the front and back layers at the bottom point. At least 1/4" of the string of the tassel should extend past the outer edge of the fabric.

Secure the three layers together with pins.

Sew a 1/4" seam along the sides and bottom, leaving the top open for turning.

Begin and end 1/1/4" from the top when sewing the sides; the dowel will be added in this place.

Turn the bell pull right side out.

Sew seams for the dowel. Sew a straight stitch through all the layers, across the top edge of the embroidered checks.

Fold the top layers in and sew a 1/8" seam along the top edge.

Quilt the bell pull by sewing a 1/2" seam along the sides and bottom. Begin and end the seams below the dowel seam so that it does not get closed up. You can also quilt along the outside edges of the checked border.

Trim the dowel to an 8 3/4" length.

Slide the dowel through the top opening of the bell pull.

Attach a craft ring to the back top center with a needle and thread.
