Shifting, gapping, or puckering can occur when an embroidery design is not sufficiently stabilized, allowing the embroidery to contract the fabric too much.
If embroidery design elements are misaligned or the fabric is noticeably puckered, here are some things to check:
- File: Download a fresh copy of the design file and transfer it directly to your embroidery machine, without opening in software first. Do not resize or edit the design.
- Fabric: Make sure your design and fabric are a good match—for example, lighter embroidery designs are better for a T-shirt, while a denim jacket is better for a more detailed design.
- Stabilizer: Use a stabilizer that will properly support the embroidery. In most cases, we recommend a medium weight cutaway stabilizer. Attach the stabilizer to the back of the fabric with temporary spray adhesive.
- Hooping: Hoop both the fabric and stabilizer together, taut like a drum. Make sure they are held securely and won’t slip.
- Obstruction: Make sure the area around your embroidery machine is clear, and that the hoop isn’t bumping into anything while stitching.
