Designs Used

Freestanding lace designs have been specially digitized for water-soluble stabilizer. After the stabilizer is removed, beautiful lace remains behind.

There are a couple of different kinds of water-soluble stabilizer. One is clear and plastic, and that brand is Sulky Ultra Solvy. The other is soft and fibrous, called Vilene.

Both will work very well. Sulky Ultra Solvy is used in this demonstration.

Use a size 11 or 75/11 sharp sewing needle. A sharp sewing needle has a smaller, finer point than an embroidery needle. That means it will make smaller holes in the stabilizer.

Freestanding lace is seen from both sides, so wind a bobbin with the same thread that you're using in the needle.

The 3D lace designs contain three pieces. The file names are marked with A, B, and C. Hoop a piece of Sulky Ultra Solvy or Vilene, and embroider each of the files. You'll find that 40 weight rayon or polyester works well, as does 30 weight cotton. Metallic thread can also be used in freestanding lace designs.

After embroidering, trim the excess water-soluble stabilizer away.

The stabilizer's packaging should give instructions for removing the excess. For Sulky Ultra Solvy, soak in water hot from the tap for 15 - 20 minutes. For a stiffer lace piece, soak a little less so that some of the residue from the stabilizer remains in the lace.

Allow all the pieces to air dry. Shown left are all three pieces of the snowflake: from left to right are pieces A, B, and C.

Join pieces A and B together by lining up the slots and sliding the pieces together. Make sure that the tops and bottoms of the pieces line up nicely. Sew a few stitches by hand at the top and bottom to keep the pieces together.

Slide piece C over the top of pieces A and B. Ensure that the tops and bottoms are aligned.

Assembling the Lace Angel

Assembling the Lace Angel

Piece A is shown left, top, and piece B is shown left, bottom. Align the center slot of piece A with the center slot of piece B.

Slide the pieces together until the ends of the slots meet. Sew a few hand stitches at the top and bottom to hold the pieces together.

Align piece C (shown left, top) with the top of the combined A and B pieces.

Slide piece C around the middle of the assembled pieces until the end of the slot meets the top of the first pieces.

To secure the pieces in place, hand-stitch the pieces together on the top and bottom.

Gorgeous lace is a stunning addition to any Christmas tree, and these intricate and unique 3D lace ornaments bring a stylish (and impressive) look to your holiday decor.
