Supplies

  • 1/2 yard linen fabric
  • 1/2 yard print cotton fabric (quilter's cotton)
  • Medium-weight cutaway stabilizer

Tools

  • Compass rule
  • Air-erase pen or dressmaker's pencil
  • Masking tape

Designs Used

Tape the edges of the linen fabric to hold it in place, then draw a 24" link across the fabric for the embroidered piece.

Measure and mark the center of the line.

Use a compass rule set to 12" to draw a semicircle connecting the ends of the line.

Next, place the start of the ruler at the top right corner. Measure down and mark where 8 1/4" intercects with the curve. Then on the top straight edge, measure and mark 10 1/2" away from the right corner. Draw a line connecting the two marks.

Templates are printouts of embroidery designs, and they are excellent tools for planning where to stitch. Open the embroidery designs in embroidery software and print them to make templates. Position the template to the right of the line, 1" from each side of the shape and 1 1/2" from the bottom. Align the vertical axis line with the point at the top of the shape. Mark the center point and the horizontal and vertical axis lines.

Remove the tape from the fabric. Hoop the fabric with one piece of cutaway stabilizer, aligning the marks on the fabric with the marks on the hoop.

Attach the hoop to the machine, and load the design. Move the hoop so the needle is right over the center point. Embroider the design. Use a size 11 or 75/11 sharp sewing needle when stitching on linen.

After embroidering, trim the excess stabilizer away from the back. Cut out the shape.

Lay the embroidered piece on top of the quilter's cotton fabric right sides together. Pin in place. Cut around the shape of the front piece.

Sew a 1/3" seam along the outer edges of the fabric leaving about 4" open along the top edge.

Turn the fabric right side out and press the seams with an iron. Also, turn the fabric of the opening in 1/4" and press.

Top stitch a 1/8" seam along the entire outer edge of the napkin.

To fold the napkin, lay it flat with the embroidered side facing up. Fold the napkin lengthwise, right sides together, with the top right corner about 2 1/2" from the top left corner.

Then, fold the top right corner back again and align the straight edges together. Press the fold. Fold the left side to the back, align the straight edges together, and press.
