Designs Used

Freestanding lace designs have been specially digitized for water-soluble stabilizer. After the stabilizer is removed, beautiful lace remains behind.

There are a couple of different kinds of water-soluble stabilizer. One is clear and plastic, and that brand is Sulky Ultra Solvy. The other is soft and fibrous, called Vilene. Both will work very well. Vilene is used in this demonstration.

Use a size 11 or 75/11 sharp sewing needle. A sharp sewing needle has a smaller, finer point than an embroidery needle. That means it will make smaller holes in the stabilizer.

Freestanding lace is seen from both sides, so wind a bobbin with the same thread that you're using in the needle.

Hoop the stabilizer firmly. Make sure it is nice and tight with no wrinkles.

Use 40 weight rayon or polyester thread. You can also use 30 weight cotton or metallic thread for most freestanding lace designs.

Embroider the lace.

After embroidering, cut the excess stabilizer away.

The stabilizer's packaging should give instructions for removing the excess. For Vilene, soak the lace pieces for a few moments.

Air dry, then press using a pressing cloth.

Add fabric glue along the outer edge of the headband.

Press the lace in place with the right side of the lace facing out.

In this example, the lace is 1 1/2" up from one end of the headband.

You can add decorative elements like feathers, beads, or crystals to give your headband extra style.

Use fabric glue to add feathers to the backside of the lace; add heat-set crystals or glue crystals to the lace.

Wrap ribbon around the headband to add color or match the color of the lace.

Glue one end of the ribbon in place at one end of the headband, wrap the ribbon around the headband, and glue the other end of the ribbon in place at the opposite end of the headband.

Then, add the lace piece as instructed above.

These gorgeous lace headbands are a stylish way to add a burst of color and flair to your wardrobe.

Stitch in different colors to match your favorite outfits!

Each of the designs come in two sizes -- stitch the small size as a stunning accessory for kids, too.
