Guarantee good dreams with a breathtaking freestanding lace dream catcher! Hang above your bed to capture the bad dreams, or simply use as a way to fill your home with the beauty of freestanding lace embroidery.

Supplies

  • Water soluble stabilizer (like Vilene or Sulky Ultra Solvy)
  • Heavy weight thread or thin leather cord (for bead and feather hangers and for top hanger, I used 0.5mm size cord)
  • Beads and heat-set or glue-on crystals
  • Fabric glue

Designs Used

Freestanding lace designs have been specially digitized for water-soluble stabilizer. After the stabilizer is removed, beautiful lace remains behind. When you download the 3D lace designs, you will find four files. One is the top section and the other three files are the feathers.

There are a couple of different kinds of water-soluble stabilizer. One is clear and plastic, and that brand is Sulky Ultra Solvy. The other is soft and fibrous, called Vilene. Both will work very well. Vilene is used in this demonstration. Use a size 11 or 75/11 sharp sewing needle. A sharp sewing needle has a smaller, finer point than an embroidery needle. That means it will make smaller holes in the stabilizer.

Freestanding lace is seen from both sides, so wind a bobbin with the same thread that you're using in the needle.

Hoop the stabilizer firmly. Make sure it is nice and tight with no wrinkles.

Use 40 weight rayon or polyester thread. You can also use 30 weight cotton or metallic thread for most freestanding lace designs. Embroider the top section.

After embroidering, cut the excess stabilizer away.

The stabilizer's packaging should give instructions for removing the excess. For Vilene, soak the lace pieces for a few moments.

Air dry, then press using a pressing cloth.

Embroider the three feather pieces.

To assemble the dream catcher, wrap heavy-weight thread or thin leather cord around the bottom edge of the top section; tie a knot. Add beads to the thread. Tie a knot at the bottom to hold the beads in place.

Use fabric glue to add a lace feather at the end of the beads. Or, you can leave a length of cord and tie the feather onto the end of the beads. Repeat for all three feathers.

You can add heat-set crystals or glue-on crystals for extra sparkle. Fabric glue works well when adding crystals to the top section. You can also use bead or gem glue to add the crystals.

Add a hanger to the top edge using the thread or cord from before. Loop the cord and tie a knot to secure the loop in place.

Native American culture uses dream catchers to ward off nightmares and attract positive spirits. Hang one in your bedroom, or as a decor item for your home.
