Designs Used
The Battenburg Snowflake design has two pieces. Part A is the center, and part B is the outer piece.
The doily is made with one center piece, and six outer pieces.
Use 30-35 weight cotton thread when embroidering Battenburg lace designs.
This type of thread is also found under different names, such as mercerized cotton or all-purpose cotton.
You will use the same thread in both the top and the bobbin. Wind a bobbin with the cotton thread.
Embroider part A once, then part B six times.
Battenburg lace uses two colors; change the bobbin thread for each color.
Trim the excess stabilizer away. Then, soak the pieces in water to remove the remaining stabilizer.
Check your stabilizer's package instructions to see how long to soak the stabilizer. For Sulky Ultra Solvy, soak the pieces for 15-20 minutes in hot tap water.
Allow the pieces to air dry, then press. Use a pressing cloth to prevent scorching.
The next step is to stitch the pieces together.
Place the center piece and one of the outer pieces together, right sides up. Arrange so that two of the rounded edges of the center piece touch the bottom edge of the outer piece, as shown.
Use a zigzag stitch to sew the pieces together at the two points where the lace pieces touch.
Use the same cotton thread used to embroider the designs to stitch the lace pieces together.
Align the second outer piece next to the first piece. Arrange so the outer pieces touch, with the bottom edge of the second outer piece aligned with the center piece.
Use a zigzag stitch to sew those pieces together. Repeat for all the remaining outer pieces.
Dainty Battenburg lace doilies are terrific additions to your decor. Use them to add a lovely, elegant look to you home.
